520 _aResidential developments in North Bandung has been one of the problems in both Bandung Municipality and Bandung District because these developments have effects on the environmental quality, particularly groundwater resources, hazards such as erosion/flooding, and the decrease of water quality. Based on this problem, the existing residential development in North Bandung needs to be reexamined through the selection of proper land for development (residential); also, an appropriate Building Coverage Ratio (BCR) has to be formulated. Physical factors and socio-economic factors and other data are taken into account to the assessment of land suitability for residential areas in North Bandung. For the physical factors, there are 5 factors that have been considered : slope, allowable bearing capacity, susceptibility to landslide, groundwater recharge area, and groundwater resources. The socio economic factors cover the factors land use and land market value. Geographic Information System (GIS), particularly the Arc/Info software, is used to compile both spatial and attribute data, perform overlay (analysis) and to draw the maps. Based on the physical factors, there are 22,689.72 Ha (61.49%) land that is suitable and 14 ,209. 84 Ha (3 8. 51 % ) land that is not suitable for residential development; whereas, based on the socio-economic factors the suitable land area is 22,781 .07 Ha (61 .74%) and land that is not suitable is 14,118.51 Ha (38.26%). Furthermore, 20,516.08 Ha (55 .60%) of land is suitable while 16,383.48 Ha (44.40%) land of is not suitable for residential development in North Bandung. To keep the stability of groundwater supply to Bandung city, the residential development has to follow the guideline of building coverage ratio of 25%-30% and for other particular areas it is recommended that the BCR of 20% be used.
