520 _aIn Thailand, many highway agencies particularly the Department of Highways encourage the design of pavement structures based on the mechanistic-empirical (M-E) approach instead of the empirical design approach. The change is due to the fact that the empirical design cannot consider the continuous growth of the traffic volume and the increasing of truck weights. The use of empirical charts to design the thickness of the pavement structure could lead to some errors in thickness design. The M-E approach determines the pavement response to wheel load in terms of stress, stain and deflection. This approach of pavement design is more accurate and reliable. In the M-E approach, the material, traffic and environmental factors are important parameters as design inputs. In this research, the traffic load was emphasized in the analysis of the new flexible pavement design, rehabilitated pavement design and pavement overlay. The traffic data were collected from the Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) stations on four national highways around Bangkok area. The traffic characteristics such as the traffic volume and the traffic load were analyzed to determine the truck factors and used in the design. In addition, the obtained traffic parameters were used to design the thickness of new flexible pavement and pavement overlay on one selected highway by using M-E approach. The M-E design can apply for various pavement structures depending on considerations of engineering judgment of the designers. The design considers the total thickness of the pavement structure, the material of each layer, the environmental issues, the budget and other considerations such as traffic, road class and service life of the pavement. In this study, the thickness of the overlay design and the existing properties of the layered materials on a selected road were determined using a Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD).
