| 520 | _aAn analytical study of ripple formation and its effects on sediment transport are carried out. An initial dimensional analysis identifies the predominant factors affecting the behaviour of ripple formation as the relative smoothness of bed sediment and the densiometric sediment Froude number; An exponentially decaying transient function related to these parameters can be used to describe the ripple geometry. The expressions developed for ripple are applied to determine the resulting sediment transport based on the continuity equation of sediment transport. The effects of transient ripple growth and different variations of ripple celerity on sediment transport is investigated. A study on turbulent boundary layer formed due to the presence of ripple and the resulting sediment suspension is made. The rate of suspended sediment transport is determined from a velocity profile and a mean concentration profile. Finally based on the results of suspended sediment transport, an attempt is made to discuss the movement of suspended sediment. It is found from the study that the ripple celerity has a strong influence on the magnitude and direction of sediment transport in the transient state. The analysis of suspended sediment transport revealed that in general sediment particle velocity is a fraction of the water particle velocity. | ||
