520 _aResearch on a novel process in which ammonium is converted to dinitrogen gas under anoxic conditions with nitrite as the electron acceptor is carried out. Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) process is studied in the fluidized bed reactor with NH4N and N02N as feed. The reactor was initiated with seed sludge from nitrifying/denitrifying fluidized bed reactor. The startup process lasted for 42 days. NH4N and N02N concentration was increased from 100 mg/I to 300 mg/I, and loading was changed from 0.218 to 0.638 kg NH4N/m3reactor·d and from 0.22 to 0.637 kg N02N/m3reactor·d during the startup. Upflow velocity was maintained at 3 m/h during the startup. By the end of sta1tup, NH4N and N02N conversion of 74.77% and 77.07% were obtained. During process operation, influent NH4N and N02N concentration was increased in steps from 100 mg/I to 300 mg/I. Upflow velocity was maintained at 3.17 m/h. According loading rate was varied from 0.288 kg NH4N/m3reactor·d and 0.332 kg N02N/m3reactor·d to 0.874 kg NH4N/m3reactor·d and 0.878 kg N02N/m3reactor·d. NH4N and N02N removal was obtained as 87% to 95%. Gas generation was observed as 3.453 lid at 0.874 kg NH4N/m3reactor·d loading rate which was 56% of theoretical yield. N2 composition was observed to be from 98% to 99 % of total biogas volume.
