| 520 | _aThis study aims at evaluating land use changes in the Upper Ayeyarwady River Basin of Myanmar and investigating historical and future land use change impacts on streamflow for the selected Myitnge sub-basin. In this study, land use maps in the Upper Ayeyarwady River Basin for 24 years from 1992 to 2015 were compared and analyzed. In this basin, shrubland and grassland decreased from 28,891km2 to 18,429km2 which indicates 5.3% reduction and loss of these areas were shifted to croplands. For selected Myitnge sub-basin, forest and shrublands occupies totally 28.24% and 24.59% in 1992 and 2015, showing 3.65% reduction,barren and others was 2.31 % reduction while croplands have resulting in 5.7% increasement during the period. Land use change impacts on streamflow in the historical time periods for the Myitnge sub-basin were investigated using rainfall-runoff model (HEC-HMS). It was found that the past land use change in the Myitnge sub -basin result in increase of Curve Number of the hydrologic model. Consequently, averaged flow and peak flow were found to be increased due to the land use change. Dyna-CLUE model was employed to project the future land use in the Myitnge sub-basin up to 2050. HEC-HMS model was calibrated comparing observed and simulated land use map in 2015. For Dyna-CLUE Validation, Myitnge Sub-basin obtained overall accuracy 90% with Kappa index value "0.84". Three different scenarios were established to determine land use change impact on streamflow, namely "Trend Scenario", "Forest Conservation Scenario" and "Agricultural development scenario". CN values were obtained using historical four land use maps and projected until 2050 for three different scenarios and annual rainfall events between 1992 to 2015, apply to HEC-HMS modeling. Trend Scenario was found to produce higher flow for defined rainfall events compared with the current land use whereas Forest Conservation Scenario produces lower flow, which is better in the viewpoint of flood control than other scenarios. | ||
