| 520 | _aThis study looks into the effects of an afforestation programme on the socio-economic conditions in Java and it considers the relationship between project participation and benefits derived from it. At the time of study, the project was in its fourth year of implementation. The specific objectives of this case study are: (1) to determine the farmer's income, the land productivity, the labour involved in agricultural activities and the landuse intensity with and without project involvement and (2) to evaluate or look into the correlation of income with the participation and attitudes to the Afforestation Programme of the farmers. The findings of this case study are: (1) The net annual income of agriculture in the treated area was lower than in the untreated area. (2) The land productivity in the treated area was higher than in the untreated area. (3) More labour was involved in agricultural activities in the treated area than in the untreated area. (4) The landuse intensity in the treated area was higher than in the untreated area. (5) The participation and attitudes of the farmers in the afforestation programme were not correlated with their net annual income. Recommendations for improvement of the implementation of this programme are the following: (a) to improve factors such as government incentives and infrastructures that accelerate the implementation, (b) to continue the government services in terms of training, guidance and controlling, and (c) to continue and enhance the non-agricultural sector activities. | ||
