520 _aImprovement in power loss, voltage drop and reliability of electric power distribution systems have become a topic of increasing concern in Laos because of rapid load growth, the wide geographical area it covers and high loss level in the power systems. Since loss is one of the basic parameters indicating the efficiency of the system, loss reduction is also necessary for efficiency improvement of the power system. The aim of this study is to analyze the power loss of the Champassak provincial distribution system and find the best way of reducing high systemic losses. Using techniques of capacitor placements and increasing the capacity of distribution transformers in the primary distribution system, losses have been reduced effectively. The result of this study proved that not only loss reduction but also alternative improvements involving the power factor and the voltage profile were achieved with these loss reduction techniques. Analysis has been considered in three cases. Losses of Champassak provincial distribution system were evaluated in existed case to measure the actual technical losses of the system, capacitoring case has been analyzed for loss reduction of the system and economic analysis case for evaluation the cost of losses and present worth savings. The economic evaluation of Champassak provincial distribution system has been studied for economically feasibility of loss reduction techniques, economical analysis was only made with one cost of energy. Reliability analysis was also described additional technique as consideration recloser on the line to implement reliability evaluation of one primary feeder which increases frequently number of faults in every year. Finally, the necessary options and future studies which are concerned with this study, have been discusses.
