520 _aThe research has been carried out in the Lower Gugera Branch of Lower Chenab Canal System (L.C.C.), which irrigates one of the most agriculturally important tract. The menace of water-logging and salinity faced in the study area is the major inhibiter of increase in agricultural productivity. This study was intended to find the impact of irrigation practices, especially canal water allocation on cropping pattern, and water-logging and salinity status and to improve canal water allocation among and within the distributaries. The six distributaries, two in each reach i.e. head, middle and tail of the Gugera branch were selected for intensive research. The chak wise cropping patterns and intensities, and the present status of water-logging and salinity is determined from the various sources including satellite image interpretation. By the use of Geographic Information System (GIS), maps showing the spatial changes in water-logging and salinity are prepared. The areas affected by salinity are in the middle and tail reaches of the Lower Gugera Branch. In the middle reach salinity problem is due to the high water table and in the tail reach due to the use of poor quality groundwater. The results reveal that crops which are sensitive to salinity and more water consumptive are grown in the head reach and those which are salt tolerant and less water consumptive are in the tail reach of the Lower Gugera Branch. It is found that the present cropping pattern, water-logging, and salinity is related to the seasonal and spatial fluctuation of canal water availability within and among the distributaries. The canal water supply to the head reach can be reduced during both the growing seasons. Instead, canal water supply to the tail reach distributaries should be increased during May to June, and Rabi season. Adjustment of seasonal and inter-distributary canal water allocation may necessitate additional reservoirs in the upstream area and/or farm ponds in the command areas for temporary storage of water resource. The improvement of drainage, and conjuctive use of canal and groundwater can combat the salinity problem in the middle reach of Lower Gugera Branch.
