520 _aAn available software titled as SIMIS(Scheme Irrigation Management Information System) has been used for studying the operation of the Petchaburi Irrigation System in Thailand. SIMIS is a menu-driven system of integrated databases provides information, which gives substantial guidance or basis for planning, implementation, operation maintenance and management of an irrigation system. Agricultural activities, Water distribution, Operation and Maintenance, Accounting, Water consumption and water charges are the management activities manipulated by the SIMIS. The physical data required for this Information System was collected from Petchaburi Irrigation Project. The databases are set up in the Project Support Module. Crop Water Requirements of various crops cultivated in the area is calculated in "Crop Water Requirements" sub module. From Total Crop Irrigation Needs, best planting time and crops to be grown can be decided. In 'Seasonal Irrigation Planning module" Seasonal Irrigation water needs are calculated under different cropping patterns and planting areas. Comparison between Possible Scheme Water Supply and Scheme Irrigation Needs provides a better alternative of cropping pattern and eliminates future water shortages. The flexibility characteristic of the SIMIS allows easy adaptations in local conditions. The applicability of SIMIS and the possible improvements for making it more useful have been outlined.
