520 _aThis thesis presents a novel one-persistent idle signal-casting spread spectrum with overload detection protocol (IP-ICSS/OD) for CDMA cellular networks. It is based on the modification of an existing narrowband scheme, i.e. one persistent signal-casting multiple access with collision detection (IP-ICMA/CD), to work in CDMA systems. However, the more efficient CDMA packet access strategy, named as one persistent carrier sense spread spectrum with overload detection (lP-CSSS/OD), has already been proposed but for optical LAN networks. Consequently,' in this study the model of lP-ICSS/OD is analysed as the combination of lP ICMNCD and lP-CSSS/OD protocols. The new packet CDMA approach is evaluated in various voice radio channels. A comparative evaluation of the competing access techniques and the novel protocol are exercised with an example voice traffic model under multiple-access interference assumption. The results demonstrate the throughput and delay performance in terms of the number of active mobile terminals. Finally, These are used to identify the system offered capacity while maintaining an acceptable voice performance. It is shown the capacity gain of lP-ICSS/OD over the existing protocols in a DS/SSMA system.
