520 _aGeosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs) are widely used as part of composite liner systems in municipal solid waste landfills to prevent the escape of contaminants into the surrounding environment. Installing GCL in the field exposed to solar radiation which shrinkage may occur in this application. In this study, there are two different products of geosynthetic clay liners namely granular bentonite GCL (GCL A) and powdered bentonite GCL (GCL B) were obtained to study the characteristic. The appropriate standard test methods for GCL were performed to understand the characteristic of two products. Moreover, to investigation the shrinkage behavior between granular bentonite GCL and powder bentonite GCL types, wet-dry cycling tests program were performed in the laboratory. These studies were accomplished by placing GCL samples that were cut to approximate dimensions of 0.35 m by 0.60 m on aluminum pans with their as-received water content. The two small ends of the samples were clamped using a continuous bar-clamp screwed to the pans. The amount of water of 500mland extra water of 1000ml were added to hydration process. For a cycle, wetting phase, the specimens ware allowed to hydrate for 8 hrs in a room temperature at 20°C. During this period, the specimens were covered with moisture-barrier plastic to prevent moisture loss. Then, the specimens were took place in ovens set to 60°C for15 hrs in drying phase. The samples were subjected to cycles of wetting and drying about 30 cycles. The change in width of GCL specimens were monitored upon drying phase. The magnitudes of shrinkage were recorded in order to compare the behavior of granular bentonite and powdered bentonite GCL specimens. The effect of bentonite GCL type and effect of extra added water to hydration process were carried out. Subsequently, the initial rate of shrinkage for the specimens with extra water appears to be higher than for those wetted with the standard amount of water. There were no effects on final equilibrium of shrinkage on specimens with extra water added. In addition, the types of powdered bentonite GCL specimens tend to shrink more than granular bentonite GCL.
