520 _aProtection and future development of groundwater resources can be planned properly and more carefully with information from vulnerability assessments of the groundwater aquifers. The groundwater is susceptible to anthropogenic contaminations from the surface and sometimes in itself contains chemical constituents which make it harmful for human use. The objective of this study was to analyzed trends of the groundwater in the study area in terms of quality and water levels and to assess the degree of vulnerability risk from anthropogenic activities. The method of analysis was preceded by data collection and analysis, where trends from of the water quality and water levels derived. Geological sections were made to understand the physical characteristics of the aquifer. Properties of the aquifer were obtained from a previous modeling study. These were then used for the DRASTIC vulnerability ad GLA effective protectiveness analysis in the GIS environment. The results of both methodologies are then compared. The trends of the groundwater quality and water levels show that in some areas, The chemical contents exceed allowable limits and also decline in groundwater levels over the period of 30 years. Fluoride has been found to be in higher concentrations (exceeding the allowable limits for drinking purposes) in the southeastern end of the Chiang Mai Lamphun basin. High nitrate levels in the groundwater shows that there is possibility of nutrient leaching from agriculture land. Iron content was also found to be above allowable thresholds for drinking purposes. The DRASTIC map shows high vulnerability in the northern and mid-eastern parts of the basin which are urban and mixed orchard areas.
