520 _aAn optimization program has been applied to the irrigation management planning in an operation irrigation system in order to allocate water to achieve the better water use efficiency. Genetic Algorithm was used as optimization technique to find optimal irrigation scheduling. Water was allocated from main canal to secondary canal. The program was written on visual C++ version 6.0 computer language and run in a Pentium III, CPU 801 MHz, RAM 248 MB computer. The objective function of this model is minimum total water supply. It is satisfy two constraints which are soil moisture content and canal system capacity constraints. The results were gained since the program was run many times. The optimal result was chosen which is the lowest water supply. Song Chu irrigation system of Thanh Hoa province, Vietnam is chosen as the study area. The system is divided to two sub-systems. They are north system and south system. However, they taken water for irrigation from same headwork that is Nhu Phuc sluice. The program was applied for two systems separately. Total water supplies at headwork giving by genetic algorithm were compared with actual water supplies which were results of previous studies. The comparison proved that the optimal water supplies by GA are much lower than actual one. The study also compare about economy and irrigation efficiency between optimal and actual value. The study indicates that the optimal irrigation scheduling does not only save water resource but also avoid water stress situation for the system. Meanwhile, it brings high net benefit to farmers in the system.
