520 _aThe Moheshkhali Island, is one of the largest coastal islands of Bangladesh, was selected as the study area because coastal fisheries play a significant role in the economic and social life of Bangladesh. The research deals with the formulation of decision-making process for the sustainable development of coastal fisheries in Bangladesh. The research was conducted in the island, aiming to achieve the following objectives: to determine the current status and trends of fisheries through local indigenous knowledge by community participation, to assess the coastal fisheries, and to formulate the decision-making process for the sustainable development of Moheshkhali coastal fisheries by application of PRA tools. PRA, literature review, and interview with fishers were used to assess the current status and trends of fisheries in the study area. The study used four methods of PRA: Participatory mapping method was used for analysis of pattern in space. The fishing activities of different fishing gears drawn on maps were modified and shown on the GIS maps by using GIS tool. Seasonal calendar method was used to support the analysis of pattern in time. The result from problem ranking method was used in problem analysis. The most serious problem found in PRA was "Declining fish stock by using destructive gears". Time line study was also used to find the changes of fishery resources and livelihood activities as perceived by the fishing communities. The findings showed that production performance in the coast was mainly affected by improper fishing practice, rampant use of destructive gears, low technical knowledge, inadequate extension services and low accessibility to credit facilitation for the coastal fisheries. To formulate a decision-making process, four objectives were constructed considering all the causes leading towards sustainable development of coastal fisheries such as Zoning conservation & fishing area, Natural habitat protection & management, credit facilitation and development of eco-tourism. To achieve each of these objectives, a number of strategies were formulated with actions and responsible agencies. Finally, the recommendations given in this study to improve coastal fisheries production were focused on increase of manpower of DoF at union level, provision of extension services, formation of fishers groups, effective implementation of registration system, provision of credit support, and establishment of fish cell, zoning and integrated policy for coastal zone
