| 520 | _aFive compression load tests on bored piles in Bangkok subsoils have been analyzed. The diameter of the piles varied from 0.80 to 1.50 m and their lengths from 23 to 45 m. Four piles were instrumented either with strain rods or strain gages. Analysis of the load tests was carried out with respect to both load transfer and settlement. The load transfer behavior was evaluated by means of a step integration technique, while for settlement a simplified method based on Mindlin's approach for subsurface loading within an elastic halfspace was selected. The results showed that load transfer increases rapidly with small movements of the pile and at shallower depths reaches a peak at a movement of about 3 mm. Most of the load was carried by shaft friction and even close to failure the load transmitted to the tip was less than about 20% of the total applied load. The computed elastic settlements agreed well with the observed values for the initial loading cycles, but at higher loads the residual settlements caused the total settlements to exceed the values obtained from elastic theory. | ||
