520 _aLandfill leachates have high concentration of pollutants, which must be treat before discharge it to groundwater or other water resources system for minimize the environmental impact. A study was perfonned to examine the feasibility of biological treatment of landfill leachate. A laboratory scale activated sludge sequencing ·batch reactor process was used to carry comparative study on COD removal and nitrification process. Leachate samples were collected at two operation landfill sites of different age. Phitsanuloke landfill sites (PSNL), which has been under operation since 1999 and Onnooch landfill site was operated for 20 years and is closed now. The concentration of leachate from PSNL was higher and showed higher fluctuation than the leachate from Onnooch landfill site. Sludge retention time (SRT) at 10-12 days for different leachate showed the best result removal efficiency. Removal efficiency 80-90 % for PSNL leachate was observed at a pollution load of 0.7-0.8 kg COD/kg SS-d and 0.13-0.16 kg BOD5/ kg SS-d respectively. For Onnooch landfill leachate 80-90% removal at loading 0.21 kg CODI kg SS-d and 0.1-0.2 kg BOD5/kg SS-d was observed. However, Thai effluent standard of COD 120 mg/I, was neither met by PSNL nor Onnooch but at the given loading, Thai effluent standard of TKN 100 mg/I, was met by the Onnooch landfill leachate only. A partial nitrification for PSNL and Onnooch landfill leachate was observed. At the high concentration of leachate that can not treated well with only an activated sludgeSBR, leachate from PSNL, suspended carrier biofilm media was applied to improve the removal efficiency . Two types of media, bamboo chip and plastic media, were used. The results of pollutant removal efficiency after treatment with bamboo media are nearly the same as plastic media but higher than activated sludge -SBR An average COD removal of 82 % with bamboo, 85 % with plastic media and 80 % by activated sludge were observed. Furthennore, the reduction of COD and TKN in landfill leachate, suspended carrier biofilm activated sludge with bamboo chip media should be considered due to its give high removal efficiency and less cost than plastic media.
