520 _aThis study deals with a theoretical and experimental investigation of the applicability of linear elastic fracture mechanics in predicting the first tensile crack strength of ferrocement reinforced with aligned continuous fibers. Taking into account the improved mechanical properties of ferrocement, a method for predicting the first crack strength in direct tension was developed based on the concepts of linear elastic fracture mechanics and mechanism of crack arrest. Extensive experimental work was carried out to check the validity of the proposed expression. An emphasis was given on the definite influence of the specific surface of reinforcement. numerical solutions were conducted for the cases covered in the experiment. Experimental findings lead to the conclusion that the first tensile crack strength of ferrocement can be rationally predicted on the basis of the concepts mentioned. Numerical solutions substantiated by experimental results establishes a linear relationship between the first crack strength and the specific surface of reinforcement. The numerical method being suggested can lead to a better design against cracking for certain applications of ferrocement.
