520 _aEnergy conservation is an important concept for reducing energy consumption throughout the world. For any country application of this concept to the energy intensive sectors produces remarkable result. Modern buildings are one of the most energy consuming sector for most of the countries. This study focused only on the external heat gain part of total cooling load of a mechanically cooled building which consumes significant amount of energy. For the calculation of building envelope performance hourly meteorological data for the year 1990 has been used. Some computer program written in Turbo Basic is used for this analysis. Thermal properties and mass of wall are considered for this analysis. By varying the wall thickness, material, absorptivity of wall surface equivalent temperature difference were calculated for four different facades. Solar factor for eight different facades were calculated for four different angle of inclination of the surface. With different configuration three common types of shading devices namely Horizontal overhangs, Vertical fins, and Egg crate were analyzed to determine the effectiveness of those shading device on fenestration. Shading coefficient produced by those configuration were calculated. To improve the Overall Thermal Transfer Value (OTTV) of a building three different alternatives like improvement of glazing materials, reduction of window to wall ratio and insulation of opaque wall were analyzed. Since the roofs are well insulated for damp proofing purpose, and use of sky-lights are very uncommon, the Roof Thermal Transfer Value (RTTV) for typical roofs is very small. Therefore in this study much attention was given to the wall section of building. To identify the most energy efficient walls configuration for Bangladesh, Brick and Concrete walls of different thicknesses and effect of insulation thickness on heat transfer were considered. And also the effect of relative position of the wall mass and insulation were studied. For this analysis a model hypothetical building similar to typical buildings in Bangladesh was used to calculate the OTTV and to see the effect of different alternatives on it. The above mentioned alternatives were applied to observed the improvement of OTTV of the typical case. A simple calculation for annual electrical energy consumption were performed to see the benefit of implementing the building energy performance standard. Applying the calculated values of different parameters of OTTV from this analysis, present OTTV of typical building in Dhaka was determined by using the configuration data of an existing building.
