| 520 | _aThis research is an empirical study manufacturing industries selection in a newly country, the Republic of China on Taiwan. on appropriate industrializing Based on reviewing literature pertaining to industrial policymaking and appropriate industry and the current status of Taiwan's economic and industrial developments, the selection criteria and sub criteria have been identified. A proposed selection model was developed on the basis of a multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach. The multiple criteria approach is an integration of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and past data evaluation method. The past data evaluation method was used to provide absolute measurements for alternatives to overcome the cumbersome occurring to AHP while the number of paired comparisons among alternatives is large. Through a structured questionnaire, via a mail survey supplemented by individual interviews, 63 experts from both public sector and private sector of Taiwan provided the primary data for the model, and the secondary data f o r the model were collected from some governmental publications. Geometric-mean method has been used to synthesize the judgements from experts to obtain the consensus on relative importance of criteria and sub criteria. The priority weights for criteria and sub criteria were determined by AHP through a hierarchical representation and pairwise comparisons and the local priority weights for candidate manufacturing industries were determined by past data evaluation method. The results from public and private sectors were aggregated to yield the overall priority weights for criteria, sub criteria, and candidate manufacturing industries. It showed that the environmental concern is the most crucial issue for industrial development in Taiwan and the most preferred manufacturing industry is the electrical machinery & appliances industry. The findings and recommendations can be suggested as a guideline for industrial policy-makers. | ||
