520 _aOn-site thorough investigation of Khrew Cement Factory, Jammu and Kashmir Cements Limited, Srinagar was conducted, to determine the plant process, the stack emission characteristics, potential air pollution, especially by sulfur dioxide and the abatement measures taken. An existfog short-term dispersion model was modified for incorporation of dry deposition term, to account.for dry deposition of sulfur dioxide over vegetation (receptor surface). The dispersion model is a steady state model, designed for complex (point, area and volume) source, based on Gaussian dispersion equation, taking into account plume rise, stack downwash, structural wake, gravitational settling of pru·ticles, rolling terrain, mixing height, chemical transfonnation (decay) and d.ty deposition. The d.ty deposition term incorporated is a function of dry deposition velocity and the size of the receptor surface (vegetation belt). The modified short-term dispersion model was then applied to Khrew Cement Plant, to predict the ground level concentration at different size receptor grids and discrete receptor points, with and without greenbelt. The optimum size (design) of the greenbelt required to attenuate air pollution was estimated, taking into consideration the local meteorological conditions and flue gas emission chru·acteristks. Finally, considering the net primary producHvity and fractional cru·bon content of d1y matter of vegetation, the area required for tree planting, to sequester annual emissions of principal greenhouse gas-carbon dioxide in Kashmir valley, was esHmated. The costs of sequestrating per unit weight of carbon dioxide through different afforestation options were also esHmated.
