520 _aThe electricity shortage crisis is not just a passing one , but a reality that threatens to become a permanent feature in Pal<istan in the near future. System expansion has become a popular means to meet the ever growing electricity demand. The more obvious option of improving the performance of existing electricity system, which is cheaper to implement and generally has higher and quicker returns, has been given l esser priority. It is imperative that a country which is facing serious electricity s hortages must, along with an increase in the supply of electricity through all resources at its command, also ensure that it operates t he existing electricity system most efficiently and makes economic a nd efficient use of electricity. This study identifies the opportunities to improve the technological performance of the WAPDA electricity system in the areas of power generation, tr ansmission and distribution, as well as in end-use performance in the industrial sector of the country. The technological performance indicators are evaluated to assess the performance of the existing electricity system, and areas having potential for improvement are identified. Policies are recommended in order to address these particular improvements.
