| 520 | _aThe purpose of this thesis is to explore/study the Ethernet performance evaluation with particular attention to clustering phenomenon. and to find out whether clustering has a positive or a negative effect on performance. Protocol in Ethernet is CSMA/CD (Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detect). Although analytic models evaluating CSMA/CD are available, most of them impose too many assumptions on the protocol to the point where reality is lost. Since c lustering does not meet the assumptions imposed by analytic models, simulation is resorted to in this study. The performance parameters evaluated in this study are station throughput, station delay, overall throughput, and overall delay. The simulation model simulates CSMA/CD in the real condition where location is considered as a key parameter. Many network configurations, each with different c lustered setup were studied. It was found that in general, station s in a big cluster would have better performance than stations in a smaller cluster. Also, it was found that farther t h e station is from a big cluster, the worse performance it has. The effect of clustering is reflected in two newly defined parameters. These two parameters, centroid distance and peer distance, were attributed to each station for every configuration. It was found that stations with smaller distance parameters would have better performance than stations with larger distance parameters. This relationship is verified by the calculation of correlation of coefficient of distance parameter and performance parameter. The relationship between overall performance parameters and overall distance parameters was also found- the larger the overall distance parameters, the better the overall performance. These two parameters can factor/parameter to dec ide as to located in the Ethernet bus, while LAN. | ||
