520 _aEnterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems arc becoming a necessary tool for firms to exploit its distinct capabilities in order to survive in this highly competitive business environment. Many large firms deployed ERP systems and hoped to gain the benefits such as standardization of data and business processes, better inventory management, increased customer service and responsiveness enhancing the efficient supply chain management, as well as effective decisionmaking process. Nonetheless, ERP systems can be complex, expensive and difficult to implement. Many firms have still failed to realize the ERP benefits. This study adapts the case research methodology to examine and understand the ERP adoption of two large companies operating in Thai context: one is the multinational firm, second is the Thai firm, which have implemented ERP systems in the past two years. The data collection was conducted through in-depthinterviews with ERP project managers and questionnaire surveys with ERP project team, divisional managers, and key-users in logistics area, who have been involved in ERP project in order to determine the reasons why companies chose to adopt ERP systems, assess the benefits derived from the ERP adoption, discover strategic gaps as well as problems and barriers of companies in realizing the ERP benefits. The empirical evidence confirms a number of benefits derived from ERP systems and present a higher realization the ERP benefits in the multinational firm than Thai firm. This is due to a lower level of ERP problems and barriers, extensively used ERP systems throughout the organization, and more experience in the enterprise wide systems as well as the better implementation approach. Then, the recommendations for successful realization of ERP benefits are proposed. Finally, the study highlights areas where further research is needed in the field of ERP systems implementation
