| 520 | _aTo fulfil an increasing demand of shrimp pond due to attractive economic returns from shrimp farming, selection of suitable areas based on technical , social , economical , and environmental consideration is required Remote sensing and the use of computer software called Geographical Information System (GIS) can help planners to select suitable areas for shrimp pond development. Both manual interpretation and digital processing of satellite images can be used to assess the possibility of an area for aquaculture. Resource maps, covering topography, climate, soil , forest status, land use, and other factors can be used to help in determine areas for aquaculture. GIS with PC ARC/ INFO software has potential to store and manipulate many maps depending on objectives. This study determines possible areas for further shrimp farm development in the province of Lampung in Sumatra by using GIS and remote sensing. Lampung was selected as the study area because it has a lot of advantages for aquaculture development. So far, no overall plan exists. Maps used for this study were collected from several sources and secondary data from some reports were also used, Data outputs from this study are in form of map, and tabular data. The results of the study show that there are some areas available for shrimp farm development in nawajitu, Labuhan Maringgai and Way Sekampung. Those three proposed locations are still possible to develop for coastal aquaculture. Totally, there are about 15,615 ha of highly suitable along eastern coast of Lampung and about 14,967 ha of sui table land which could be developed for shrimp farming. The study has shown that remote sensing and GIS can be used to help planners to determine areas suitable for shrimp farm development. | ||
