| 520 | _aThe vehicle stock in Yangon , the capital city of Myanmar has been growing significantly in the past ten years due to the currently in transition to a market-oriented structure and open economy. Vehicles registered in Yangon account for 50 percent of the national total, and over two-thirds of all private cars are in Yangon. Therefore, Yangon is facing vehicular air pollution problem in the recent year. The transport sector is the third largest source of emission of GHG in Myanmar. Myanmar has immense natural gas production in offshore Yadana gas field and there is a plan on 'offshore Yadana domestic gas utilization' which could readily replace gasoline and diesel fuel in the transport sector. Since Myamnar has already experienced CNG demonstration projects and the government should create awareness on CNG to continue this programme. Yangon road transport sector contributed about 1.4 million-ton of GHG in 1999 and is expected to reach 2.6 million-ton in 2015 using base scenario. But this amount of emission will be reduced to 2.4 million ton in 2015 by 'natural gas abundance' (NGA) scenario. In the NGA scenario, there is a CNG conversion programme and this will have an impact on emission of GHG, especially, reduction in liquid fuel consumption. This study reveal that operation-wise, city buses and trucks are most suitable for conversion to use compressed natural gas (CNG). | ||
