| 520 | _aIt is important to know and understand various factors affecting traditional domestic water consumption in a water-short city of Afghanistan which has a very low coverage of water supply services. The objective of this study was to assess domestic water consumption from a socioeconomic perspective and identify the most vital factors affecting the water consumption at household level. A questionnaire survey was implemented in Kandahar City, Afghanistan. Two areas were selected, first one with access to the piped-water (PW) water supply and the other area which has no access to the PW supply. A total of 70 households were surveyed with a distribution of 32 in the first category and 38 for the second category. The category of access to PW was divided into three sub categories, namely Only PW (piped-water), PW+PTW (piped-water + private tube well) and PW+PHP+Neb (Piped-water + public hand-pump + getting water from the neighbor). Similarly, the category of without access to PW also contained three subcategories such as PTW (private tube well), SV (street vendor) and PHP+Neb (public hand-pump + getting water from the neighbor). The data was analyzed using SPSS and Excel. From the results it was obtained that household income, water price, household size and access to adequate source of water are the main factors influencing the water consumption at household level. The results also suggest that the domestic water is not affordable based on the bench marks of the World Bank and ADB for people who do not have access to PW. In addition, some secondary data was collected to assess the performance of the Central Authority for Water Supply and Sanitation (CAWSS), Kandahar. The data reveals poor quality of water supply management due to lack of qualified staff in various aspects of infrastructure, financial, technical and managerial components of the utility. | ||
