| 520 | _aConventional soda pulping results in lower pulp yield and lower strength properties. Kraft pulping overcomes the problems but results in sulfur pollution. Anthraquinone (AQ) is used as an additive in soda pulping not only to enhance pulp yield and properties but cut down sulfur pollution. Laboratory studies on soda-AQ pulping of tropical mixed bamboo*, Eucalyptus Camaldulensis and Acacia Auriculiformic show that soda-AQ cook lowered the alkali demand by 2-4%, enhanced pulp properties and increased the pulp yield by 7-8% on OD raw material compared to conventional soda cook. AQ accelerated delignification, improved pulp yield, viscosity at a particular effective alkali and eliminated sulfur pollution. An addition of AQ as low as 0.05% on OD raw material gave soda-AQ pulp the same strength as kraft pulp with sulfidity of 20% for tropical acacia and eucalyptus. Pulping bamboo by soda-AQ process resulted in lower tearing resistance about 6-10 % compared to kraft. Sodium hydroxide used in soda-AQ cook was higher than that in kraft cook. The bleachability of pulp was improved by the addition of AQ to soda pulping but still lower than that of kraft. The high charge of chemicals required for the process (NaOH and Cl02) increases the cost of soda-AQ pulp. This study confirmed that AQ is a good additive in soda pulping for tropical bamboo and hardwoods but soda-AQ pulping is not cost competitive with kraft pulping. {u2022} Tropical mixed bamboo*: 33%Bambusa Procera Archer + 33% Dendrocalamus Membranaceus Munro+ 33% Neohouseaua Dullooa | ||
