520 _aThis study mainly focuses on the applications of remote sensing· and geographic information systems for an assessment of archaeological resources and their environment towards an environmental management plan. The study area are the Khao Wing Phrachan Valley and Loburi area in Lopburi Province, central Thailand. Data and information related to archaeological resources and physical environment could be extracted from large scale aerial photographs and satellite data (SPOT -Pan and LANDSAT TM) with visual interpretation and integrated remote sensing and GIS techniques. Digital images were enhanced using high pass and edge filtering provide the best detectability for archaeological resources with lineament features. Large scale aerial photographs provide the best detectability for archaeological sites among all type of data used. Digital image of SPOT-Pan provide the best detectability when compared to LANDSAT TM and its print-format. The study indicate that if quick survey or site inventory is required, SPOT-Pan in digital format provide the better and result more economic for site locating and mapping compared to conventional field survey. Accuracy of site coordinate extracting· from geocoded image is acceptable. This study also presented the classification of land use I land cover of the study area using visual interpretation on computer screen integrated with GIS. Data derived from the two technologies were input to the Computerized Basic Database for Archaeological Resources of Lopburi Province and used for further analysis and evaluation. There are 75 archaeological sites dated from 3,000 BC to present were investigated and involved in the study. · It is suggested that sustainable development approaches should be included in the management plan for archaeological sites in the study area. Further study should be conducted in order to modified and improve the database system and develop techniques in the application of remote sensing and GIS in archaeological works.
