| 520 | _aPullout and large scale direct shear tests were conducted on hexagonal wire mesh embedded in the weathered Bangkok clay. Two types of hexagonal wire mesh were tested, one is Zinc-coated wire mesh with a diameter of 3.0 mm, and the other is PVCcoated wire mesh with an inner core diameter of 2. 7 mm. Both types of cell size have dimension of 100 mm x 80 mm. The tests were conducted at four different normal pressures, 30 kPa, 50 kPa, 70 kPa, and 90 kPa and pulled or sheared at a rate of 1 mm/min. For pullout tests, the effective length of both types of wire meshes used were equal to 0.70 m, 0.90 m and 1.10 m, respectively. These were done to investigate the interaction between reinforcement and soil, and determine pullout and shear resistances of each type of reinforcement in weathered Bangkok clay. In-air tensile tests were also conducted to investigate the relation between tensile strength and in-air length. The average ultimate tensile strength of Zinc-coated and PVC-coated hexagonal wire mesh obtained by wide-width (in-air) test. Tensile test may be valued at 55.5 kN/m and 44.8 kN/m, respectively. Both types of hexagonal wire mesh exhibit nonuniform distribution of displacements when pulled in soil. Maximum displacement occurred at the pullout face and progressively decreasing towards the other end. Consequently, strain and tension in the wire mesh are highest at the pullout face and decreasing towards the opposite end. The mobilization of tension in wire mesh is directly proportional to the applied normal stress. The pullout strength of Zinc-coated wire mesh is greater than PVC-coated wire mesh due to higher stiffness of Zinc-coated wire mesh and pullout strength of hexagonal wire mesh in weathered Bangkok clay in greater than silty sand. The direct sliding coefficient, fds, of both types of hexagonal wire mesh can be greater than 1. 00 with actual value of 1.07. Predicted value of pullout resistance by Chai (1992) yielded closer results to the measured data compared to Peterson and Anderson (1980) and Jewell et al. (1984). | ||
