520 _aIn this study, the current production structure and energy usage situation of the whole Vietnamese steel industry have been described. The specific energy consumption in processes have been found to be very high compared with other steel industries in other countries: the coke rate in blast furnace is 1250 kg/t of pig iron, and electricity intensity in electric arc furnaces is about 850 kWh/t of molten steel produced. As a case study, energy analysis has been carried out for an integrated steel plant, the TISCO plant. Energy analysis for processes showed that higher productivity results in lower specific energy consumption. The first law energy efficiencies of the blast furnace, the 10-ton electric arc furnace and the largest reheating furnace in TISCO plant are: 57.54, 32.93 and 23.52% respectively. Some energy saving, cost reduction opportunities for the TISCO plant have been proposed with estimated annual energy and cost saving. The environmental aspects of steelmaking at TISCO has been studied. The major pollution sources are : the coking plant, the blast furnace, the open hearth furnace, the electric arc furnaces and the reheating furnaces in rolling mills. Situation of air and water pollution has been described. Except for the blast furnace, no environmental control devices have been installed at TISCO. The estimation of total emission from processes showed that electric arc furnaces are the largest sources of particulate and carbon monoxide. Most of SOx and NOx emissions are from the reheating furnaces . Hydrocarbons emission from the coke oven constitutes 94.8% of the total hydrocarbons emission of the plant. Based on specific conditions of Vietnamese steel market, natural resources and available technologies, some technological options for the development of the country's steel industry have been considered and energy consumption in 1994-2010 period has been projected.
