A bench-scale horizontal filter was used to study the effectiveness of the plastic media as a filter media. The various parameters affecting the filter performances were studied and the transport mechanism was investigated. Experiments were conducted by varying raw water turbidities and flow rates. It was found that the plastic balls were efficient in removing suspended solids only in the range of 30 to 60%. The optimum flow rate for this removal of small particle of suspended solids was 1.5 m3/m2 h for the different levels of influent turbidities. For bigger particle size, the optimum flow rates were 0.5 m3/m2 h, 1.0 m3/m2 h and 1.5 m3/m2 h for influent turbidity levels of 150 FTU, 100 FTU and 50 FTU, respectively. The predominant transport mechanisms in this study were hydrodynamic action and gravity. The others mechanisms were not found to be significant
