This thesis investigates the effectiveness of High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on a congested road using micro-simulation modeling. As more and more people buy cars, many of the roads in the world fail to keep up with the demand. To solve this problem, HOV lanes or car pool lanes are being implemented around the world. This study examines whether implementing car pool lanes can reduce the congestion in a highly congested road. The road under consideration is the Chaeng Wattana Road in Nonthaburi. The time period under analysis is from 3 pm in the afternoon to 8 pm, which would include the whole afternoon peak period. The two types of HOV lanes, limited access and continuous access were evaluated and compared, to conclude whether they can improve and which of the two types will have the most favorable impact on the traffic congestion in the road. First step was to compare both HOV lane configurations against the base model, which was the existing condition. The results showed that implementing HOV lanes has a considerable effect on the traffic congestion in the study area. Once the HOV lanes were implemented, traffic congestion was delayed by a few minutes, and it also dissipated almost half an hour earlier. When continuous access and limited access HOV lanes were compared, the former was found to be more advantages over the latter, but only by a small margin. Continuous access HOV lanes had less stops and less stopping times during the congestion compared to that of limited access HOV lanes.
