In modern power systems, there has been a tremendous growth of single-phase non-linear loads supplied from 3-phase distribution systems, which generate unbalanced currents in the system. These non-linear loads cause poor power factor, low efficiency and interference with communication networks. To improve system performance, Thyristor Controlled Static VAR Compensators (SVCs) are already used in power systems, but they introduce additional harmonics in the AC system. The performance of SVCs are measured by, the Telephone Interference Factor (TIF), the Total Harmonic Current Factor (IT) and the Distortion Factor (D). To optimize the operation of SVCs, the unsymmetrical firing of thyristors is required. Fuzzy Logic Systems (FLSs) can be effectively used to control the firing angle of thyristors by using previous knowledge base and Fuzzy rule base with minimum source reactive power and harmonics injection in the power system. This report presents a Rule Based Fuzzy Logic approach to determine an optimum combination of the phase-wise reactive power generation from SVCs to achieve a balanced reactive power supply from AC system based on TIF.
